Nexa3D xESD resin + MechT technology: a new solution for 3D printing static-dissipative parts

Nexa3D a US-based ultrafast polymer 3D printing solutions provider, has introduced an electrostatic discharge (ESD) safe resin for fabricating static-dissipative parts, utilizing Mechnano’s MechT technology.  Mechnano is an Arizona-based start-up for AM polymers.

Mechnano’s technology is supported by almost a decade of development and research and is covered by 120+ issued and pending patents – according to the firm.

The new Nexa3D xESD, offers fundamental static-dissipative performance and isotropic mechanical properties, both of which are crucial in the electronics manufacturing industry. The material can also be utilized when handling vital electronic components on the production floor, says Nexa3D. According to Nexa3D, the xESD satisfies the need for quick manufacturing and prototyping by enabling users to quickly build unique fixtures, grippers, assembly aids, and enclosures without having to worry about ESD destroying expensive electronic components. By utilizing MechT technology, detangled and separated carbon nanotubes can be spread throughout an additive manufacturing material without re-clumping.In addition to ESD, the generated separate tubes can be customized to meet certain performance needs and provide formerly unachievable performance, of a 50% increase in tensile strength, a 200% increase in toughness, and an 850% improvement in tear resistance.

“Nexa3D’s new xESD provides an extremely valuable additive manufacturing solution for electronics applications and manufacturing,” said Bryce Keeler, President at Mechnano. “We’re excited MechT is now available on Nexa3D printers, and we look forward to working with them in the future on resins that answer the needs of additional industries.”

Advancing Resin 3D printing

The term “resin 3D printing” refers to a group of AM techniques that solidify liquid photopolymers layer by layer. A liquid material undergoes photopolymerization, a chemical reaction that modifies its properties when exposed to light (UV, laser, etc.). These materials are known as photopolymers or light-activated resins scientifically, however, in 3D printing, they are often referred to simply as resins.

Previously, Jason Rolland, SVP, Materials at Carbon, provided additional commentary for the 3D Printing Industry State of Resin 3D Printing series. Rolland said, “we have only scratched the surface of what our platform is capable of,” Carbon is active in industries such as dental, life sciences, and automotive.

BCN3D is a manufacturer of 3D printers with headquarters in Barcelona. BCN3D made its resin market debut with the release of its new viscous lithography manufacturing (VLM) 3D printing technology. The VLM process, which results from more than three years of research and development, aims to bring accessibility and high-performance materials together. It’s interesting to note that the technology will also support dual-material printing, enabling users to construct objects using two different resins simultaneously.
